Surrendering a pet
Humane Indiana firmly believes that bringing your pet to a shelter should always be a last resort. While all animals are treated and cared for humanely at our facility, a shelter is a stressful and terrifying place for a pet who has been living in a home environment. We are committed to helping reduce stress for pets and offer resource assistance for owners looking to surrender their pets.
We do not euthanize for space or time constraints, and we can only take in as many animals as are adopted. When cages are full, we are unable to take in additional animals. Please review our resource options before surrendering your pet. While Humane Indiana holds its staff to exemplary kenneling standards, we still believe that it is best practice to avoid entrance to a shelter whenever possible. Humane Indiana is very fortunate to have many programs that may aid in preventing a surrender from entering a shelter and hopefully staying in a home environment. Additionally, our team is dedicated to helping pet owners keep their pets in times of need.
Humane Indiana also offers medical services in the form of spay/neuter, vaccines, and microchipping. We may also provide initial canine and feline behavioral counseling and referral to pet trainers or behaviorists. Humane Indiana can also provide needed supplies pet owners may need to help keep the pet, including but not limited to: pet food, cat litter, leashes, collars, toys, treats, grooming products, cat furniture, and litter boxes.
Our pet food bank provides help for pet owners by providing pet food, when they need it most. Our goal is to help loving pet owners keep their beloved pet at home with them, through some difficult times.
Owner-surrenders to our shelter are by appointment only through our Pet Admissions Center, please call us in advance and make an appointment at (219) 922-3811 ext 211.
Rehome Program
APPLY FOR Rehome SERVICING
One of Humane Indiana's main goals is to help pet owners work through the difficult decision that they can no longer keep their pet. Many phone calls to our shelter include those that want to surrender their pet to the shelter for rehoming. The Rehome program allows for pet owners to safely rehome their pet through a database to find families wanting to adopt pets in our area.
THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT Rehome
Rehome allows pets to go directly into their new home without the stress of being surrendered to the shelter.
Sample rehoming agreements/contracts are available on the Rehome website under the How It Works tab. Sample questions both for owners and potential adopters to ask of each other while discussing rehoming are available as well.
Please remember to follow guidelines and regulations when meeting in person to adopt or rehome a pet. Humane Indiana and Rehome recommend meeting in a public location using the buddy system for the safety of all parties involved.
Humane Indiana loosely monitors the location of pets listed for adoption to ensure that we are marketing pets within our community, but makes no guarantees to any animal’s health, temperament, or history. Humane Indiana encourages adopters to have their new pet evaluated by a veterinarian upon adoption.
