Why Spay/Neuter?

Benefits of Spaying/Neutering Your Pet

  • Prevents unwanted litters and helps reduce the population of homeless pets.

  • Lowers the risk of serious health issues, including various types of cancers.

  • Can extend your pet's life by preventing conditions like pyometra, a dangerous uterine infection in females.

  • Reduces the urge to roam, lowering the risk of fights, car accidents, and other hazards.

  • Helps curb undesirable behaviors such as urine-marking in dogs and spraying in cats.

  • Saves money on city/town pet licensing fees, which are often lower for spayed/neutered pets.

When Should My Pet Be Spayed/Neutered?

  • Puppies and kittens can be safely spayed or neutered as early as 2 months of age, provided they weigh at least 2 pounds.

  • For pets over 7 years old, we recommend blood work before surgery to ensure their safety.

When Can My Pet Be Spayed After Having a Litter?

Once the litter is fully weaned (typically 8 weeks old), it is safe to spay the mother. We assess each case individually, so please call us to discuss your pet’s specific situation.

HOW DO I SCHEDULE A SPAY/NEUTER SURGERY FOR MY PET?

Spay/Neuter surgeries are scheduled by appointment only at Humane Indiana’s Estelle Marcus Animal Clinic.
