It’s Baby Season at Humane Indiana

NORTHWEST INDIANA – Spring is here, bringing an influx of new bundles of joy! It’s baby season, and that means it is time for Humane Indiana Shelter and Adoption Center to prepare for puppies and kittens, and Humane Indiana Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center to prepare for orphaned or injured baby wildlife animals.

The community is invited to learn more about the spring season during these special events at each of our locations:

● Wildlife Open House and Supply Drive | Saturday, April 2, 2022, from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Humane Indiana Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center in Valparaiso, IN

Learn about the mission, participate in activities and crafts, and meet the staff and ambassador animals. This event is free and open to the public; all ages are welcome. For more information on drop-off locations and items needed, please visit HumaneIndiana.org/events and our Amazon Wishlist.

● Baby Shower Supply Drive | Monday, April 4, 2022, through Saturday, April 9, 2022.

Support Humane Indiana during the annual Baby Shower Supply Drive. The organization is asking for donations such as animal rehabilitation supplies, food items, and gift cards. ● Shelter Open House | Thursday, April 7, 2022 – Saturday, April 9, 2022, from 12 - 3 p.m. daily at the Humane Indiana Shelter and Adoption Center in Munster, IN

Imagine kitten playtime, prizes, exclusive photo ops—and even a chance and adopting your new best friend. This event is free and open to the public; all ages are welcome.

At Humane Indiana Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center, warmer, milder weather signals an influx of baby animals needing help. Spring is a very busy time, with several hundred babies anticipated to be admitted to the Humane Indiana Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center between the months of March-May alone. At the end of March, staff will see dozens of orphaned squirrels, opossums, and other small mammals. Staff will continue to work with members of the community during this time of year to humanely manage nuisance wildlife issues that may inadvertently result in accidental orphans.

Growth is also taking place at the Humane Indiana Shelter and Adoption Center. Due to the growing need for Crisis Foster Care, the non-profit organization developed the Foster Clubhouse, a new space for training foster caregivers, a quiet space for babies, and an area dedicated to care with supplies and equipment needed for all animals. Keeping this area stocked with supplies and immediate care needs not only ensures longevity and quality of life for these animals, but all animals; wildlife, shelter animals, and future pets alike. “Pets are part of our families, and they contribute greatly to our quality of life,” said Mary Nielsen, President of Crown Point Community Foundation.” The Foundation is proud to invest in Humane Indiana and help ensure humane treatment for all animals.”
