Bird of Prey Jamboree—Humane Indiana’s Newest Event!
NORTHWEST INDIANA – Are you fascinated by birds of prey? Let your imagination take flight when you join Humane Indiana Wildlife for a day of birds and play. The community is welcome to the inaugural Bird of Prey Jamboree on August 6, 2022 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Indiana Welcome Center in Hammond, IN.
During the event, attendees will have the opportunity to attend special bird of prey presentations and shop the marketplace featuring items from local artists, crafters and vendors. Children will enjoy educational activities, including owl pellet dissection in the kids’ activity area.
Attendees will meet and interact with bird of prey experts and other educational groups, including US Fish and Wildlife Service, Wild Birds Unlimited, Friends of the Dunes, Izaac Walton League - Lake and Porter County Chapters, Gibson Woods Nature Preserve, The Art Barn and more.
Learn about animal ambassadors like Pomona, the peregrine falcon. Pomona was admitted to Humane Indiana Wildlife in June 2019 after being found on the roof of the county building in South Bend, IN. Pomona became injured while she was still learning to fly and due to her sustained injuries, she became an education ambassador for Humane Indiana in early 2020.
The Jamboree will feature two unique presentations to meet different bird of prey animal ambassadors, live and in-person. Each presentation is limited to 100 people and a ticket is required. Tickets for ages 8 and up are $10.00 per presentation—or get an all-access pass to attend both presentations for just $15.00. Kids, ages 7 and under are free; for every paid adult, receive up to three complimentary child tickets.
Special presentations:10:30 - 11:30 a.m: Meet and learn about the Barn Owl, Peregrine Falcon and Turkey Vulture
1:30 - 2:30 p.m: Meet and learn about the Barred Owl, Eastern Screech Owls and Red-tailed Hawk
At each presentation, Humane Indiana staff will discuss the natural history of the species as well as what brought that particular animal ambassador into our care at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. The team will also give tips on how to help protect these magnificent predators and how to coexist with birds of prey in urban areas. Please note, due to the WILD nature of wildlife, the animal ambassadors at this event are subject to change.
