Help @ Shelter

Make a Difference Today!

You can help homeless shelter pets and support our mission by donating items from our Wish Lists, sending a monetary gift, sponsoring Events, Volunteering, and so much more! We’re grateful for any efforts large and small. Together we will all protect pets and support a nurturing connection between animals and people.

Businesses Offer Many In-Kind Services

Humane Indiana appreciates and welcomes the support of local business trades through in-kind services. If you’re interested in helping us through your time, talent, or treasure, please contact our Main Office at 219.513.8911 ext. 104 or email info@humaneindiana.org.

Our Volunteers Rock!

Spread the good

Help spread the good that we do together!

  • LET’S PARTNER ON A PROJECT

Organizations and groups willing to volunteer their time to support our mission and help shelter pets is so amazing. Group project opportunities are limited and seasonal at our shelterw, however we offer alternative options for group projects and welcome group partnerships.

We are happy to support you with Pet Food/Supply Drives or Wish List Drives to benefit the needy animals at our shelter. Our team will assist you with creative ways to encourage your community, school, or group to help the animals.

Please email info@humaneindiana.org if you are interested in a Group Project or Pet Food/Supply Drive.

  • We rely on our volunteer dog walkers to help our shelter pets stretch their legs outside of their kennels. Just like your pets at home, walking our shelter dogs is essential to their daily routines and is good for their mental and physical health.

Volunteers are required to attend a formal training for dog walking in addition to extra training to shadow our dog walkers. All dog walkers must be at least 18 years or older.

Our color-coded system ensures the safety of all dogs and handlers:

Yellow – easy level – anyone can walk after shadowing a trainer for 1 hour and attending Yellow level training.

Pink – fearful dogs – requires a minimum of 10 hours logged walking Yellow level dogs and attending Pink level training to begin walking.

Blue – jumpy/mouthy, leash pullers/leash biters, or reactive dogs - requires a minimum of 25 hours logged walking Yellow and Pink level dogs and must attend Blue level training to begin walking.

Purple – dogs who have displayed elevated handling challenges. Purple level dogs are only handled by designated Volunteers with approval from Shelter leadership.

  • All Shelter pets are provided clean linen, bowls, and litter pans daily, and all of these supplies are washed on-site. On average, about 400 lbs. of laundry is cleaned and folded each day. We also aEcext donations of linens and supplies that need to be sorted daily. We rely heavily on Volunteers to keep our Shelter tidy so our Staff can focus on animal handling and enrichment.

WHY IS A CLEAN SHELTER IMPORTANT?

A clean Shelter is a healthy Shelter! Keeping the Shelter clean and tidy reduces the spread of germs, which keeps our pets healthy, happy, and Adoptable.

Paws in the Park: Consider joining our Paws in the Park Committee. Typically hosted in September, this event draws hundreds of pet lo ers and dog owners to a local park for a one-mile walk, food, vendors and more! Participants are encouraged to find fun ways to fundraise in honor of pets and their people. Planning for Paws in the Park begins each April.
